Q: My family member went to residential treatment, and now aftercare is recommended. Does my family member need aftercare?

Aftercare may include outpatient therapy, 12 Step meetings, an extended-care facility, a sober living facility, etc.  It is imperative that patients return to a safe, supportive environment after leaving an inpatient facility.  Often, the longer a patient is in treatment, the better his sobriety success rate.

Just as a patient must learn new healthy ways of operating, so must his family members look at how they interact.  Recovering from addiction is about change, and families are very much a part of this dynamic.
